Artists, as /ws/2/artist/?query=…&fmt=json returns them.
A search: the answers are ranked guesses at what was meant, and each
entry is abbreviated. Prefer artist whenever an identifier is known.
An entry with no identifier is skipped: without it a later fetch could not tell an update from a second opinion, which is the one thing the identifier is stored for.
